Stat Glossary

Qualification: batters need ≥ 10 games and ≥ 50 PA. Pitchers need ≥ 4 appearances and ≥ 20 IP.

Custom Metrics

oWar — Offensive Wins Above Replacement
Measures how many wins a hitter contributes above a hypothetical replacement-level player. Calculated from wRAA (Weighted Runs Above Average) + a positional adjustment + a park/SOS adjustment, then scaled to wins using the D3 run environment (~8.5 runs per win). A score of 0 = replacement level; 1.0 = one win above replacement for the season.
oWar = (wRAA + Pos_Adj + Park_Adj) / RPW × SOS_Multiplier
pWar — Pitching Wins Above Replacement
Measures how many wins a pitcher contributes above replacement level. Based on FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) to remove defense, converted to runs prevented above replacement, then scaled to wins. Adjusted upward for pitchers who face stronger opponents (higher SOS). Starters and relievers are compared against position-appropriate baselines.
pWar = (FIP_Replacement − FIP) × (IP / 9) / RPW × SOS_Multiplier
wOBA — Weighted On-Base Average
A single-number offensive rate stat that weights each way of reaching base by its actual run value. More accurate than OBP or OPS because it treats each event proportionally. D3-calibrated linear weights: BB = 0.69, HBP = 0.72, 1B = 0.88, 2B = 1.24, 3B = 1.56, HR = 2.00. League average wOBA in D3 is typically around .330–.345.
wOBA = (0.69×BB + 0.72×HBP + 0.88×1B + 1.24×2B + 1.56×3B + 2.00×HR) / PA
Adj wOBA / Adj OPS — Schedule-Adjusted
wOBA and OPS adjusted for the strength of opponents faced. A player who posts a .400 wOBA against top-ranked opponents is more valuable than one who does it against weak competition. SOS-adjustment scales each stat relative to the average quality of opponents faced, using the NPI-based Strength of Schedule metric.
FIP — Fielding Independent Pitching
An ERA estimator that only uses outcomes the pitcher directly controls: strikeouts, walks, hit-by-pitches, and home runs. Removes the effect of defense and luck on balls in play. Scaled to the same run environment as ERA using a D3-calibrated FIP constant (~4.2). Pitchers who consistently outperform their FIP may have strong defense or be getting lucky.

FIP = (13×HR + 3×(BB+HBP) − 2×K) / IP + FIP_Constant
SOS — Strength of Schedule
Average NPI rating of all opponents faced during the season. Used to adjust oWar, pWar, wOBA, OPS, and other metrics so that performance against strong competition is valued more highly. A team with SOS of 0.60 played a much harder schedule than one at 0.35. National average SOS is approximately 0.45.
NPI — Net Performance Index
The site's composite team strength rating. Combines win-loss record, strength of schedule, run differential, and production metrics (oWar + pWar totals) into a single number. Higher is better. Used as the primary basis for national rankings, playoff projections, and game outcome predictions. D3 national average NPI is roughly 0.45–0.55.
wRAA — Weighted Runs Above Average
How many runs above the D3 average a hitter generated, using wOBA relative to the league-mean wOBA. Context-independent — not affected by lineup position or runners on base. A wRAA of 0 = exactly average; +10 = ten runs better than average for the season. Forms the core of oWar before positional and SOS adjustments.
wRAA = ((wOBA − lgwOBA) / wOBA_Scale) × PA

Batting

AVG
— Batting average. Hits ÷ at-bats. Does not include walks or HBP.
OBP
— On-base percentage. (H + BB + HBP) ÷ (AB + BB + HBP + SF). How often a batter reaches base by any means.
SLG
— Slugging percentage. Total bases ÷ at-bats. Measures raw power by crediting extra-base hits more.
OPS
— On-base plus slugging. OBP + SLG. A quick combined measure of plate discipline and power.
ISO
— Isolated power. SLG − AVG. Strips singles out and measures extra-base-hit ability only.
HR
— Home runs. Total home runs hit during the season.
RBI
— Runs batted in. Context-dependent; influenced heavily by lineup position and runners on base.
SB
— Stolen bases. Total successful stolen-base attempts.
BB%
— Walk rate. BB ÷ PA. Measures plate discipline; values typically range from 5%–20% in D3.
K%
— Strikeout rate. SO ÷ PA. High values indicate contact problems; low values suggest bat control.
wRAA
— Weighted Runs Above Average. How many runs above average a hitter contributed, based on wOBA relative to league mean. Context-independent.

Pitching

ERA
— Earned run average. Earned runs allowed × 9 ÷ IP. Influenced by defense and ballpark.
WHIP
— Walks + hits per inning pitched. Measures baserunner prevention. Under 1.20 is excellent in D3.
K/9
— Strikeouts per nine innings. Rate of missing bats regardless of inning count.
BB/9
— Walks per nine innings. Command metric; lower is better.
K-BB%
— Strikeout minus walk percentage. (K − BB) ÷ BF. Net "true outcome" advantage. Best command indicator available at the D3 level.
Adj ERA
— ERA adjusted for SOS. Pitchers who post low ERAs against tough schedules receive a larger boost.
Adj FIP
— FIP adjusted for SOS. The most reliable predictive pitching metric on this site.
IP
— Innings pitched. One-third of an inning is shown as .1; two-thirds as .2.
SV
— Saves. Official saves recorded per NCAA scoring rules.
BF
— Batters faced. Total batters a pitcher has faced; the pitching equivalent of plate appearances.
